The Coalition is trying to make Dutton’s vision of Australia a reality; requiring people to pass a university level English test, drastically extending permanent residency requirements before people who live here can become citizens, and granting Dutton even more extraordinary powers.
The Greens and Labor will block it, and Rebekha Sharkie voted against it in the lower house - but that's not enough. If we want to stop it, we'll need more Senate cross-benchers, including Rebekha's colleagues in the Nick Xenophon Team to join them.
There’s still time to stop this from happening. The bill is unlikely to reach the Senate until September, which gives us just a few weeks to secure the rest of the critical votes that will see this bill voted out.
We can’t let Peter Dutton grab even more control over people's lives.
Together, we can make sure this legislation is stopped, and that we live in a country built on respect and inclusion.
